FLEXOGRID
Preserves & Protects
the Spaghetti Bowl

The Salt Lake City “Spaghetti Bowl” consists of the I-15 and I-80 Interchange as well as portions of SR-201 and I-215. The entire stretch of the freeway and surrounding bridge "Spaghetti Bowl" were rebuilt in order to meet the needs of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games–a project totaling more than $1.3 billion and encompassing more than 140 bridges!

The Utah Department of Transportation had concerns that all of the decks in the project would age together and create a major rehabilitation problem. To avoid this conundrum, the DOT initiated a preventative maintenance program; each year, several decks would be overlayed to preserve and extend their life. However, due to the heavy traffic demands on these roadways, all work was restricted to the weekends. Utah found their solution with POLY-CARB.

Over a span of 7 weekends, POLY-CARB coated 11 structures with the FLEXOGRID Bridge Deck Overlay System. Surface preparation was performed, followed by the MARK-135 crack sealer and two layers of FLEXOGRID. In addition, all clean up and re-striping of the roadways was completed prior to traffic being reintroduced to the decks each Monday morning.

These 11 decks totaled more that 450,000 square feet. POLY-CARB’s FLEXOGRID Machines were able to preserve every square inch, protecting an average of nearly 65,000 square feet per weekend and at one point, 110,000 square feet in a single 2-day period!

In addition to longevity, as a result of FLEXOGRID, many of the bridges that make up the Salt Lake City “Spaghetti Bowl” now offer enhanced skid resistant and better noise suppression for decades of safe travel for the driving public.
