Preserving Infrastructure
from the Inside Out

The chemical and salt resistance
provided by SAFE-T-SEAL effectively preserves the infrastructure from the inside out for long-term performance that is environmentally friendly.
For decades, we have been faced with the dilemma of storing salt, which is highly corrosive, and thus deteriorates the very infrastructures that house it, polluting the ground below.

Traditional surface coatings have failed to prevent the intrusion of sodium chloride ions and to address the problem. In addition, their production and use is harmful to the environment and provides short-term protection at best.

To seal and protect their salt domes, the New Mexico Department of Transportation needed a solution that rethought traditional offerings to provide:
  1. Long-term protection of both the salt dome floors and walls from chloride penetration.
  2. An environmentally conscious choice, eliminating salt run-off that could potentially pollute the ground below.

POLY-CARB was able to respond to both demands with their chemical and salt resistant system, SAFE-T-SEAL, which is solvent-free and effectively preserves the infrastructure from the inside out. It consists of a sprayed layer of MARK-135, a solvent-free resin that is completely saturated with aggregate. The aggregate provide a skid-resistant and monolithic sacrificial wear surface that renders the system impervious to heavy equipment and truck traffic.

Each salt dome houses tons of sodium chloride that gets packed flush
against the walls, requiring rugged protection on both the vertical wall
and horizontal floor surfaces.

MARK-135 from POLY-CARB was
sprayed on the walls
at a thickness of 10-12 mils (150 Sq. Ft/Gal.).
The floors were then sprayed at 16-18 mils (100 Sq. Ft/Gal.).

Benefits of using MARK-135:

  • MARK-135 seals the entire surface and completely fills in any existing cracks in the concrete.
  • The unique properties of MARK-135 allow it to be applied vertically to wall surfaces and horizontally to floor surfaces.
  • MARK-135 sets quickly for rapid facility use recovery.
  • MARK-135 is free from any environmentally damaging solvents.
The entire application for two salt domes, covering 17,600 sq. ft., took less than four hours and was ready for normal operation the following day.

This state-of-the art system provides unparalleled performance and illustrates the benefits of developing advanced technologies that outperform the competition while serving to protect our environment.
