Safe & Sound -
UREGRID Offers Advanced Waterproofing for 215 Bridge Decks.

MoDOT Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program mapIn order to restore the condition of 802 of Missouri's lowest rated bridges over a five year period, The Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) initiated the unprecedented Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program (Safe & Sound).

MoDOT's visionary
Safe & Sound program was designed to:
1

  • Restore all project bridges to at least a “satisfactory” condition (6)
  • Minimize the duration of public inconvenience during construction and maintenance.
  • Maximize community and stakeholder acceptance.
  • Maintain project bridges for a minimum period of 25 years after they are upgraded, then return project bridges to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission in “satisfactory” condition (6)

While the program was originally envisioned in 2007 as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain contract, current turmoil in the financial markets made the proposal unaffordable, so MoDOT moved forward with alternative methods to deliver Safe & Sound.2

MoDOT Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program signIn May of 2009, KTU Constructors was selected to replace 554 bridges in a single Design-Build package. The remaining 248 bridges are being improved using a modified Design-Bid-Build approach, where projects are grouped by type, size or location to accelerate construction schedules.

“These badly needed improvements will mean crashes avoided, jobs created and the ability to get where you are going easier.” 3

Due to the long-term strategy of the Safe & Sound program, waterproofing was identified as a desired activity for the 215 box-beam bridges, which are to receive an asphalt wearing surface. Unfortunately, Departments of Transportation and other entities in the US who own, maintain and operate these types of bridge decks have tried conventional systems for waterproofing, but have experienced and documented high risk of failure and limited service life.

POLY-CARB has been working closely with KTU Constructors on the Design-Build to offer a solution to their challenge of protecting these 215 bridge decks. “Speed of construction and flexibility in construction schedules to respond to local issues were also critical components of MoDOT's program requirements. For 493 bridges on low-volume routes, the contract requires the average closure be 45 days.”4 POLY-CARB MARK-155 UREGRID met the criteria and was selected as the solution.

POLY-CARB MARK-155 UREGRIDPOLY-CARB MARK-155 UREGRID is a proven, cost-effective, easy-to-implement advanced polymer monolithic waterproofing system for conventional and reinforced concrete, box-beam and metal bridge decks that have an asphalt wearing surface. It is spray-applied with robotic technology specially developed for this application and provides long-term protection from corrosion caused by water, de-icing chemicals and other contaminants to extend the life of the asset.

  • Proven performance
    - Reliable impermeability
    - Technical validation in MO, OH and UT
  • Cost-effective
    - Long waterproofing service life to extend asset life
    - Maximizes current budgets
    - Minimizes future expenditures
  • Easy-to-implement with minimal traffic inconvenience
    - Controlled installation with robotic technology
    - Fast curing for expedited back to service time
    - Extended construction season
Pete Rahn, MoDOT Director in 2008, said, “We promised to give Missourians a safer transportation system by fixing hundreds of our lowest-rated bridges in a short amount of time, and we'll deliver on our promise. We are excited to get to work. The sooner these bridges are under construction, the sooner Missourians will reap the benefits - safer roads, more jobs and increased mobility.” 2

POLY-CARB has completed the waterproofing of 49 Safe & Sound bridges with the POLY-CARB MARK-155 UREGRID Waterproofing System. By December 2012, all 215 contracted bridges are scheduled for completion.
